What did you "chew on" as you read?

As I read Chew on This, I became increasingly angry. I felt like fast food corporations were taking advantage of children by appealing to them at such an early age. The fact that they would have focus groups for kids as young as 2, that they would pay kids to go to slumber parties and ask them questions, and that they target kids by having Playlands were just three small things that bothered me. I find the whole concept of a "Happy Meal" quite disturbing now after reading this book. I never thought that they would try to alter our mood through their food offerings. My students know that I used to love McDonald's items (I used to stop there nearly everyday). I think I may cut back on that.

What was your reaction to the book? Back up your reaction with an example from what you read.

My reaction to this book was that it was wrong for the companies to trick people into thinking that it is good to have fast food. In the book it said that the owners of McDonalds and Walt Disney were saying that if they added a McDonalds into disney land then that would pull kids to eat the fst food instead of something better. That is my reaction to the book.

  2. This book made me sick! I feel like never eating fast food again. Especially how they target kids to eat there. I feel sad for the animals though and how they're slaughtered. And it's so painful for them! Then making them cannibals is even worse. Who wants to eat their own species? Not I! I'm going to try now to stop eating at fast food places.

  3. I thought Chew on this was the most disgusting thing ever. How could you use children to make money? Just because kids have more money then anyone doesnt mean you should make them un-healthy.

  5. I actually thought that the company's were genious. Evil, but genious. It's mean, of course, and not the right thing to do, but how they thought of it, is pure genious to me!

  8. When I read the book my first reaction was just wow. I wanted to do something about all of these fast food resturants. It was very sickeing. While i kept reading it my family was bringing home mcdonalds. I began to think about what is in all this stuff. As i started to read the books I began to not really care for what was in a mcdonalds hamburger or something like that. I began to eat anything I wanted again. I dont think i would have been mad at mcdonalds probaly, of the way they treated the animals but its the person's fault if they didnt watch how they eat. if you have that in ordr then everything should work proparly, but in other words, I was amazed, shocked, and very very thoughtful.

  10. I thought that it was funny because they put a bug on the smoothie and some people dont know what is in it and they think that only fruit is in it when they are actually eating a bug blended with fruit. If some people read this book and think its disgusting on what fast food resturants put on their food to make it good and still people go to it.

  12. I really thought Chew On This was an eye opener for everyone who loves fast food. The entire industry has done a great job of marketing themselves as something we have to have. The idea of the Happy Meal prize was very interesting. The "prizes" that come in the meal are actually made in China using children working under bad conditions. I am not a fan of fast food and this book clinched it for me. I gave this book to several people for Christmas gifts!

  14. While I was reading CHEW ON THIS, I was feeling sick reading the book. That really discuss me is that people used some kind of bugs to make the food colorful like the drink pink. I used to go to McDolnalds when i went with my dad in the weekends. So everytime I went with my dad I told him lets eat at home, but my brother wanted to go to McDolnads. I told him about it but he said,"Mmmmm, delicous!" Thats what I hate when my brother doesnt understand but he will, when he grows up.

  15. I really love how the author expresed himself towards the fast food corporations. I was surprised how the food chains take advantage of little kids who don't reailize that all of this is bad for their health. I'm defenetly never going to eat there again and I'm going to pass the word to others. All of the people do have to be responsible for what they eat but they should be informed to make a choise.
